Roger Penske’s takeover of IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has opened the door for a potential F1 return to The Brickyard.
Following the news that Penske (below) had taken over running the home of the Indy 500, an F1 race was touted to be on the consideration list alongside the possibility of hosting an Indianapolis night event.
As Penske ponders what next for his new purchase, Liberty Media continues to press for a second race in the United States to be added to the F1 calendar, and a spectacle under lights at Indy could make for the ideal solution.
F1 last raced at the famous oval back in 2007, with Lewis Hamilton taking victory for McLaren ahead of then team-mate Fernando Alonso.
F1’s American owners have been actively trying to secure a second US race, with Miami the favoured destination. Proposals for a street race around PortMiami were effectively ended due to local protest, and a new agreement to stage a race out of the city outside the Miami Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium is yet to be given the green light.
As Liberty continues to push for a second US date to grow the sport in its homeland, a return to Indy could be the answer to its American dream.
