No chance of bridging the gap

When the Brooklands Society had cleared things up at Brooklands Track after the war it was impossible to once again complete the circuit because the Hennebique Bridge, part of the Members Banking where the track crossed over the River Wey, was missing, having been demolished for safety reasons.

The Society hoped the military might provide a suitable bridge, even if unbanked, to connect the banking to the Railway Straight but they were unable to help. Thus at post-war rallies, cars could drive along the Members Banking, but in the wrong direction.

When the Track was being built in 1907 this bridge had been provided by The Yorkshire Hennebique Contracting Company Ltd of Hennebique House at the Mount in York. They supplied and installed the bridge at the price of £4666 12s 6d.
