What you get for that is an absorbing 230-page book which reviews the 20 sportscar race venues in Southern California, including Willow Springs, Riverside, Del Mar and Bakersfield. Logically enough, it takes a track per chapter, tells the story of each sportscar race there, supplements pictures with reproductions of each programme cover and reports on how the circuit is today.

Art Evans doesn’t take the reader back in time (though the photographs do); but he produces a text chock-full of information about the greatest time and place to be a racing driver. DM
