Tough and Spyker

Sir,

Bill Boddy asks in his article on SF Edge’s record-breaking Spyker (December issue) why he chose a Spyker. I can answer this by quoting directly from a treasured letter I have from Gwenda Hawkes who, in 1922, was Mrs Gwenda Janson.

“The attempt was organised by my thenhusband as combined publicity for both the car — of which he had the agency — and S F Edge. If I remember correctly, my own participation was mainly designed to attract more publicity — the star turn was Edge, certainly not me.”

Gwenda Janson is shown in the photograph accompanying the MOTOR SPORT article astride a 249cc Trump-JAP motorcycle. In the Double 12 run, she covered 1071 miles and 1180 yards, at an average speed of 44.65 mph. Gwenda was tough!
