Injection interjection

Sir,

After reading Keith Howard’s excellent article on Lucas Fuel Injection in the December edition, I just wish to correct one point.

The article makes reference to Mercedes using fuel injection as early as 1952. In fact, the 10 300SLs built by the factory in 1952 were not fitted with any form of fuel injection but instead had three Solex 40 PBJC carburettors. These ten cars were fitted with M194 engines which produced 171bhp — depending on the type of race for which they were entered.

The first 300SL to be fitted with the Bosch Fuel Injection was the llth built, completed in 1953, which saw its power rise to 225bhp at 6000rpm with the use of the fabled M198 engine.

Keep up the hard work — the articles get better and better.
