Moss Thorpe

It was bitterly ironic that Moss Thorpe finally looked to be on the verge of making real progress in his racing career when he died, aged 20, on the evening of November 24. He was killed instantly when the car in which he was a passenger hit a tree near his Cambridge home.

Encouraged by his father Colin, well known in motor racing circles for his preparation business, Moss started his career in karts in the mid 1980s, racking up many wins before he graduated to Formula Ford as soon as he was old enough, in 1990.

From the start, he showed a useful turn of speed, but financial considerations generally led him to concentrate his activities on the regional series at Brands Hatch. This year, he won eight races in his GAR Motorsport Ray, which was enough to give him the title. On the back of his success, he had negotiated a Formula Renault drive for 1994.
