Faith, hope and clarity

It is always easy to approach a new year in an optimistic frame of mind. One year ago, indeed, we found ourselves doing exactly that.

With hindsight, it was partially justifiable. Yes, there have been unsavoury moments which have sullied the sport, just as there seem to be every year. Equally, there have been positive steps taken to regulate key issues, and it is encouraging to note promises of increased commitment from constructors and manufacturers to Formula One, IndyCars, Formula 3000, touring car racing and Formula Three. Bright news too is the Best of British Motorsport initiative, the promotional impetus of which should help to stimulate interest in the British F3 Championship, a series that has been all but forgotten by a general public swept along with the gathering momentum of the excellent BTCC.

The aforementioned can all fairly be labelled as good news.

There are, however, hazy horizons. As this issue of Motor Sport closed for press, the sport’s powers that be were assembled in Paris, addressing myriad vital topics.

We are particularly concerned that the FIA sets out clear guidelines for the future of international rallying. Very soon. No manufacturer can justify the expense of investing in the construction of new competition cars when the rules are clouded by uncertainty. Will four-wheel drive Group A cars be permitted to continue, or will two-wheel drive be enforced?

Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter what specification is decreed. The important thing is that the FIA makes up its mind quickly.

In the past 18 months, we have all seen how continual procrastination in Paris has stalled the possible rebirth of international sports car racing. It hasn’t enthralled F1 team owners either, since the showdown last July.

In the light of that, we are asking for two things. Firstly, we’d like to see clear and even-handed government. Secondly, we’d like to see it applied across the board. S A
