Peugeot's Sports-car plans

Automobiles Peugeot has announced its intention to contest the 1991 Sports Prototype series with its own car and engine. Peugeot Talbot Sport, the competitions arm headed by Jean Todt which created the all-conquering T16 rallycar, aims to run a car for at least part of the 1990 season, for a Championship assault in 1991.

Without committing itself to any predictions about its engine layout, or the use of four-wheel steering, the company released sketch illustrations of a car which show that a strong Peugeot identity is considered important. Designer Andre de Cortanze will work with Gerard Weltier head of Peugeot’s styling section, who shaped the record-breaking WM-Peugeots which have been appearing at Le Mans for many years.

Although the harmonised 3.5-litre regulations mean that the new engine could race in Formula One, the company says that it has no Grand Prix plans.
