Comment on the RAC

So the RAC Motor Sports Council are introducing yet more paperwork, as you mention in the December issue. I think your headline for that column “The RAC Strikes Again” is not, however, really appropriate. If they did strike a lot of people would be very happy.

It seems that this organisation has gone the same way as the country’s bureaucracy. Too many people shuffling too many bits of paper that need even more people to administer. It is about time they stood back and took a long, thoughtful look at themselves. By their self-justification and empire building they are killing the very thing that gives them life. Who now really enjoys organising an event when piles of paperwork, checking of loads of rules and many arguments are more important than anything else? If there is not soon a return to a reasonable level of sanity, there will be fewer events and fewer competitors to keep these bureaucrats in their palace, let alone their jobs.

If the reason for the new licences is to raise money, how about actually trying to reduce the costs of she Motor Sports Council? For a start, let me suggest they get their backsides out of Belgrave Square. leaving room for an Embassy or someone else who can afford one of London’s most up-market streets. Look at the real world, RAC, not one in which your spend is merely regulated by the amount of “tax” you decide to impose.

So let as now sit back and wait for the Motor Sports Council to tell us what splendid chaps they are, what a good job they do and why they cannot operate from anywhere other than Central London. They may believe it, others will not and will drop out of the sport and take up kite flying.
