In these days of diminishing service and willingness to help, readers may be interested in hearing of one garage at any rate whose standards are unimpaired. Whilst towing an historic car back from Scotland after racing it at Ingliston I had the misfortune to lose a wheel off the trailer on the M6 a few miles south of Penrith. A wheel bearing had seized and the studs had been sheared off. The first garage I tried on the recommendation of an AA patrolman didn’t want to know, but they at least did me a favour in naming a garage who might help. This was Messrs. R. R. & D. Sowerby of Lancaster and I cannot praise too highly the assistance they gave me. Although they don’t specialise in motorway breakdowns their manager on hearing of my predicament, borrowed a transporter and, although it was lunch time, recovered the car and trailer at considerable personal inconvenience. Subsequently it proved extremely difficult to track down the parts required but they stuck to it doggedly although there can have been little profit in it for them. The manager even offered to bring the trailer and car to London (about 260 miles) if it was difficult for me to return to Lancaster to collect it when it was mobile again.

I was complaining I couldn’t prevent it happening! However, along with everyone else involved we enjoyed the event enormously and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the organisers very much for all their hard work.
