Improved Imps
The Rootes’ Group has announced improvements to the Hillman Imp, resulting in a new Super Imp and a Mark II of the Imp De Luxe. Both models retain the 875-cc. aluminium alloy power unit which produces, as before, 42 b.h.p. and 55.6 lb. ft. gross torque. Larger inlet and exhaust valves have been fitted, with a correspondingly modified cylinder head and an increased choke size (from 20 to 22 mm.), The clutch diameter has also increased from 5 1/2 in. to 6 1/4 in., and the accelerator pedal has been slightly changed and re-positioned for greater sensitivity. A manual choke is fitted, with floor-mounted lever.
The De Luxe version has improved sound insulation (an obvious improvement), two ashtrays at the rear, a better facia trim and a leather-cloth covering for the front parcel tray rail. The redesigned seats already fitted to recent Imps have been retained.
The Super boasts all the improvements of the De Luxe. plus a few extras. It can be distinguished by a narrow strip of contrasting colour running from stem to stern just below the waistline, a different grille and extra chrome-work on the wheel trims.
Inclusive price will be £539 5s. 5d. for the De Luxe and £565 17s. 1d. for the Super Imp.—G.P.
