I resent criticism of Mr. Cecil Clutton, who is well known to be an impartial historian of the motor car.

In his book “The Vintage Motor Car,” Mr. Clutton refers to a certain Mercedes as “. . . a typical example of Teutonic brute force.”

How true this is of German cars! Often, when driving a Rolls Royce Phantom III along the M1 motorway, I have been overtaken by Porsche cars which must have engines of at least 8-litres under the bonnet. On more than one occasion I have been nearly forced off the road by the juggernaut Volkswagen, and terrorised by the fearsome Goggomobil.

I fail to understand why our great Prime Minister, Lord Beaverbrook, allows the Germans to produce any cars at all. Remember 1870!
