MONTE CARLO

On Boxing Night we spent six hours clearing a way -through a snowdrift in a Kentish lane, that we could extricate our modern 8 h.p. saloon. Long before the job was done we had given much thought to those enthusiasts who will soon be starting on the Monte Carlo Rally and who will probably have such tasks to perform many times over in far colder, more desperate conditions, not after a comfy day with normal consumption of good food, but after hours without sleep and rest and days and nights without proper meals. We, in. our small experience, discovered a few ‘shortcomings in the car under these conditions, not noticed before. Which proves the value of the Rally. Incidentally, the car was a Ford Eight and it deserves ‘credit for excellent acceleration, splendid steering and surprisingly good road-holding, on ice and snow, and very pleasant Girling brakes. To those adventurers and enthusiasts in the 1939 Monte Carlo we extend every good wish. The British entrants at the time of writing are :—P. A. Collins (Railton), G. W. Wilkins (Triumph), Miss Wilby (Lea-Francis), J. H. T. Edwards-Moss (S.S.), S. C. H. Davis (Daimler), A. E. Dobell (Railton), B. W. Fursdon (Wolseley),
