On through the night, the next obstacle was a check “by a hay-stack” which was fortunately located by all, and where an acceleration and braking test was held. After this, with much route finding on the part of stiff-fingered passengers, came the observed hills of Stancombe (where an O.M. and Richards-Brown’s Chrysler failed), Sheepscombe and Portway, the latter being difficult to find through a slight error in the route card, and causing much congestion of revving Bugattis down cul-de-sac lanes. The finish was at Broadway, and the

last 20 miles stretch was cunningly arranged over narrow lanes with gates (fortunately open). At least two luckless individuals were caught in this trap, “pausing too long” to admire the dawn, and being unable to make up time on the last stretch to the ” Lygon Arms.”
