1977 Lynx D-Type (pictured above)

Sold by H&H, £213,750

Known for the quality of its Jaguar XKSS, C and D-type ‘evocations’, Lynx Engineering was less than a decade old when this superb replica of a works D was created. Originally based on a ‘high tail’ 1955 car, it was updated by Lynx to ’56 trim and has since been extensively driven on road and track. Still wearing its original aluminium body hand-built by Williams & Pritchard, it had been in the same ownership for almost 25 years, having sold in 1997 for £69,000. Although laid-up with an electrical fault a decade ago, this warhorse was expected to need minor fettling to be returned to running order.

1926 Rolls-Royce 20hp

Sold by H&H, £64,400

Those of a certain age will remember this Royce from the TV series The Darling Buds of May starring David Jason. The previous two owners had each shelled out £100,000 to own it… ouch.

1993 Ascari FGT Prototype

Sold by RM Sotheby’s, £19,550

A bargain – this prototype of the Ascari Ecosse worked hard as a promotional car before being abandoned in a farm building for 13 years. It was restored with the help of its designer Lee Noble.

1963 Maserati Sebring

Sold by Bonhams £92,575

This fabulous example of a ‘gentleman’s express’ was refurbished some years ago but appeared to have had little use since. With a few minor jobs to finish it off, it looked a tempting winter project.

1976 Renault Alpine A442

Sold by RM Sotheby’s, £1.9m

Part of the extensive and remarkable Guikas Collection of competition cars, this is the only A442 in existence no longer owned by Renault. One of four cars built, it raced at Le Mans in 1977 and 1978, respectively driven by Jacques Laffite and Patrick Depailler, and Derek Bell and Jean-Pierre Jarier.

1988 Citroën 2CV6

Sold by Artcurial, £33,450

Ah, the humble 2CV – or, at this price, perhaps not. Sold online as part of Artcurial’s French Collection, the car had covered 35,000 miles. It exceeded its low estimate by more than three times.

2013 Caterham CK-01 kart

Sold by Collecting Cars, £2951

This as-new kart sold for what could be considered pocket money. One of a handful built for use in a challenge series for teens, it had never been used on track and simply needed fuel, oil and a battery.

1964 Porsche 356 SC

Sold by The Market, £42,100

This 356 was presented in race/rally prepared condition complete with bucket seats, a rollcage and fire extinguishers. Owned by the Belgian vendor for five years, who had raced the car at Spa.

Forthcoming car sale highlights

Bonhams
Scottsdale, Phoenix, US, January 27

Bonhams kicks off the 2022 auction year with its annual Arizona sale. This is where the ex-Scuderia Filipinetti Le Mans, Spa 100Kms and Imola 500Kms-winning Ferrari 275 GTB soared to £6.3m in 2015. There could be some stellar results this year too.

RM Sotheby’s
Paris, February 2

RM Sotheby’s looks set to give official auction house Artcurial
a run for its money during this year’s Rétromobile. Among the lots will be competition cars that span seven decades of motor sport. Notable is a 1969 Abarth 2000 Sport Tipo.

Bonhams
Paris, February 3

Bonhams will once again set out its stall during Rétromobile amid the spectacular surroundings of the Grand Palais. Highlights include four Hispano-Suizas, one of which is an H6B with original Torpedo open tourer bodywork. It could realise £250,000-plus.

Gooding and Company
Amelia Island, US, March 4

Winter may still be with us but the sunlit uplands of this spring Florida sale are not far ahead. Cars already consigned include a fabulous 1998 RUF Porsche Turbo R in French Blue and a 1955 Ferrari 195 Inter, one of the 11 made with Ghia bodywork.
