Brighton speed trials
Despite a poorly-supported racing-car category, there was a very large and lively entry exceeding 250 cars for the Brighton Speed Trials on September 17th. Competition in the well-supported saloon classes was…
Renowned BMW specialist Munich Legends was in for a surprise when it got a call about a Tii nearly four years back. The car that came in for valuation was what Munich’s Dan Norris describes as a “time capsule”.
The left-hand-drive car had been purchased from Park Lane BMW in London in 1972 and ended up in Portugal after a tour of Europe. The civil unrest culminating in the Carnation Revolution of April 1974 resulted in the owner getting out of the country in a hurry and leaving his BMW behind.
After the 2002 was relocated back to the UK in the 1990s, it was kept in dry storage before Munich recommissioned the car ahead of its sale.
“As with any car that has been off the road for a long time, anything that is made of rubber had perished,” says Norris. “The ‘dreaded Kugelfischer’ is a much used term — it had to be overhauled, but we’ve got one of probably three technicians in the country who can do that.”
Leak-down and compression tests were performed on the engine, while some minor blemishes — what Norris calls ‘bedsores’ – on the Golf yellow paintwork that were the result of water dripping onto it while in storage needed attention.
“The car has an amazing story and was specced up with twin fog lights, a Webasto sunroof and all sorts of cool extra stuff,” says Norris. “It was a privilege to have a car like this in our workshops.”
