Trial and sprint successes

The popular VSCC Welsh Trial in October had a very healthy entry. The Presteigne Trophy was won by Keith Dobson’s Austin 7, the Smatcher Trophy by David Leigh’s Frazer Nash, and the Harry Bowler Memorial Trophy by Ben Colling’s 3/41/2 Bentley. The Judges’ Gavel went to Christopher Dallas’s A7 Ulster while Anabel Jones navigated Martin Trenchard’s 41/2-litre Bentley, which won the Talyllyn Trophy in the road rally.

The VSCC had 109 entries for its Autumn Sprint at Goodwood on October 27. Fastest time was by Paul Richardson driving ERA R14B, in 101.03sec. Runner-up was Robert Cobden in the Riley Falcon Special (105.39sec). Best vintage time was set by Jonathan Cobb with the Super Sports ‘Nash (108.29sec) and the quickest Edwardian car was the 1913 Th. Schneider of Nick Ridley (146.28sec). Best run by a modified sports car was Ben Collings’ 41/2-litre Bentley (116.89sec); Roger Collings chose a Frazer Nash Super Sports over his customary Bentley and was 8.84sec slower than his son.
