Gawaine Baillie, who died in December, aged 69, began racing saloons in the late 1950s. In 1959, he joined Equipe Endeavour using Jaguar 3.4s, staying with Mklls into ’62 before switching to the big American Fords for which he’s best remembered. In his Galaxie, Mustang and V8 Falcon, he made a big impact on the British saloon scene, winning his class in 1966.

Up to his death he was still running the successful engineering company, HPC, that he established in 1959.

The nephew of Dorothy Paget, he inherited Leeds Castle in 1974, later bequeathing it to the nation.
