Guy Griffiths

With the death of Guy Griffiths the motoring world has lost another great character. I shall miss hugely the phone chats we had as we both grew older.

Guy began trading cars at 18, with exciting machines at affordable prices. He drove his own cars a 1922 GP Sunbeam, Bugattis from Brescia to GP, and the AnzaniNash ‘The Spook’ in VSCC and other events, and supplied props for TV, which led him to form his Chipping Camden Museum.

But most of all he became one of the greatest motor racing photographers, as epitomised in 1946 And All That, a collection of his work. I recommend any would-be lensman to read his preface.

We will miss seeing Guy walking with his long staff round the circuits, taking action shots and intimate stills. I used to call at his house on Monday mornings after race meetings to collect pictures for Motor Sport. No-one can replace this busy chap and all we can do is to offer sympathy to his wife and family. WB
