Keke's diary
Qualified: 3rd Result: 2nd
“Gilles was a great rival but, I have to say, I did see his accident coming. But you have to push such thoughts from your mind when you sit on the grid.
‘We had the new car, FW08, and it was magically quick in the fast corners; loads of front-end grip, and the rear followed somehow or other.”
The Renaults faded almost from the start, and Keke was soon in the lead, but that ‘lack’ of rear adhesion took its toll.
“Some people said, ‘Keke drove too hard and ruined his tyres, and he made a mistake on the second-last lap’. But Wattle was 2.5sec quicker than me; his pass on me was on the cards already. I’d say I prevented the mistake for a very long time, but not quite long enough.
“I passed the track Monday morning, and it was totally deserted. There was just a pile of liner and rubbish -and Gilles’ helicopter” The disappoiniment of defeat had been put into context.
