Renault's guiding light

Sir,

It was fascinating to read Mark Hughes’ piece about Renault’s early Fl aspirations in the late 1970s and early ’80s. For the sake of accuracy, however, I should point out that the Renault President responsible for the revival of their motorsport ambitions was Bernard Hanon, not Anot’

He was unceremoniously fired by the French Government as he had managed Renault from substantial profits to enormous losses. Most of these were due to Renault’s unsuccessful foray into the United States. But Formula One had to share the blame and was pruned back by Georges Besse, who replaced Hanon and had to go on a major costcutting exercise.

I believe Bernard Hanon should be properly recognised for his enormous contribution.

I AM, YOURS ETC,
