Obituaries

One of the most successful lady racers of all time, Elisabeth Junek passed away recently in her native Czechoslovakia, aged 93.

She achieved her most notable results in the 1920s, winning the two-litre sports car GP at the Nurburgring in 1927. In 1928 she led the Targa Florio outright for a while, before dropping back to finish fifth.

That was to be her last year as an active competitor. She was persuaded to retire after her husband was killed at the Nurburgring during that year’s German GP.

She never lost touch with the sport, however, and remained a keen visitor at historic events into her later life.

We offer our sympathy to her family and friends.
