Amateur sport

Amateur, or should I say semi-professional, motoring sport forms a large part of the overall sprint and racing scene, of which hillclimbs and speed-trials are an important aspect. So I was sorry to learn from Speedscene that 1992 was not altogether a good year, with organisers having to cancel some sprint meetings through lack of support. However, a great many Championships were contested and it is encouraging to learn that a revised hillclimb course at Goodwood will be the scene on June 20 of a BARC/HSCC event. The hill was last used in 1936. Now, some 1.3 miles long, with sweeping bends and a tight section in front of Goodwood House, it is the longest course of its kind on the British mainland.

There is disquiet that apparently club racing is no longer to be encouraged at Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Cadwell Park or Snetterton circuits — fortunately there is Mallory Park, and the 750MC (Racing Secretary: Robin Knight, West View, New Street, Stradbrooke, Eye, Suffolk IP21 5JG) which offers such a great cross-section of racing for amateurs — this club has just introduced a low-cost saloon car championship.
