Those Mercedes-Benz Superchargers
Sir,
For more than forty years I have been surprised that no mention has been made by the motor press of the astonishing volume of sound made by the supercharger of the 193435 Grand Prix Mercedes-Benz cars.
I shall never forget on the first practice day of the 1934 GP of France hearing through the woods of Monthlery the wailing of stuck pigs as the training car of Brauchitsch approached nearer and nearer. The noise had disappeared by the Monaco Grand. Prix of 1936 with the redesign of the induction system, but by then, as Caracciola once put it to me, the din, designed to discourage the others; had worked some measure of ruin on the nervous systems of the Mercedes drivers themselves. Caracciola further remarked that this screaming could he heard for a distance of 4 kms. even through the hills and dales of the Nurburgring.
