The Fiat 125

Sir,

After 67,000 miles in a Fiat 1500 Estate and 26,000 in a 124 saloon I have just swapped a 125 with 23,000 to its credit for a 125 Special.

There can be no question that in 38 years of motoring this 125 was the pleasantest car which I have had. Whilst the turning circle could be smaller, the direct steering was a joy, as were the brakes. Never flogged (27-30 m.p.g.), the performance on three-star was good enough to satisfy the not-always stodgy needs of middle-age. Apart from a certain reluctance at low revs, the engine proved thoroughly reliable and smooth and never developed a thirst for oil—just as well in view of the awkward dipstick.

The sometimes bouncy ride made me pine for the i.r.s. of a Borgward Isabella Combi (120,000 miles), although friends found no fault here. The heating system was sometimes inadequate, but the dipping mirror should be compulsory on all cars.

The 1500 and 124 were good, the 125 much better, the Special promises well.

Many thanks for a splendid magazine.

Benington.
