And now - praise for Sunbeam-Talbots
Sir,
It was with great delight that I read Mr. Wilson’s letter re Sunbeam Talbots. At last someone has spoken in defence of these magnificent machines which probably achieved more successes in international rallies during the period 1950 to 1957 than by any other British make of car.
I wholeheartedly agree with every opinion expressed by Mr. Wilson and would add that I have yet to see a better-looking motor car, the finish being excellent and the standard of interior comfort first class. During my four years as the Owner of a Sunbeam-Talbot 90 I have driven and worked on all versions of this type a car and would point out that a well-maintained, well-driven example can show a clean pair of heels to many modern and supposedly high-performance vehicles.
My own car, LLJ 900, is a 90 Mk. II saloon prepared and entered for the Alpine Rallies of 1952, and 1953 by G. R. Hartwell Ltd. of Bournemouth. Like Mr. Wilson, I will be extremely grateful for any information from anyone who knows anything of the history of my car.
In conclusion, I would like to point out that the registration number of Mr. Wilson’s prototype Alpine is MWK 969 and not MUK 969 an printed. A point not mentioned by Mr. Wilson is that his is the car used for the record runs at Jabbeke when, I believe, the car exceeded 120 m.p.h. in the hands of Stirling Moss.
