A Different Kind of Motoring Sport

Although we have two Morgan 4/4s and one Morgan Plus Four the family here, including the very first Series V made, and I enjoy very much watching my children participate in rallies and driving tests, it is a different kind of motoring sport that enthralls me.

For the last three years I have been privileged to go with a friend and often drive his Austin Gypsy on exploration days in Central Wales. We long ago successfully covered all the roads marked “Unsuitable for Motorists” that can be traversed even when it has been necessary to do considerable road-building. This last summer we have been covering ancient roads that are often only known to local residents.

The 4-wheel-drive Gypsy with power-driven winch on the front has never let us down. The rubber trailing arm suspension beats any normal spring-fitted vehicle made; proof of this is that you can pull a barrow up a kerb when you can’t push it up one!

Some of the gullies and rivers we have negotiated have to be seen to be believed and rocks as big as portmanteaux and deep peat bogs are taken in the Gypsy’s stride.

I write in praise of this amazing vehicle because no one else ever seems to, and because despite careful perusal of our two well known motoring journals for many months I have never seen a secondhand one advertised, and therefore cannot find out the secondhand value of same.

Can it be that anyone who has one thinks as highly as I do of them and once having purchased one hangs on to it, or can anyone prove me wrong and tell me where they are advertised ?
