Car sales in Belgium

As a member of the European Common Market, Belgium, without a motor industry of its own (except for some assembled foreign cars) gives a good indication of the sales potential of the various European manufacturers. The following table, published at the time of the recent Brussels Motor Show, lists the sales of the top twelve manufacturers in that country. Only one British manufacturer is listed, Ford of Great Britain selling 9,644 cars in 1962, to finish seventh out of the twelve—and Ford is wholly American owned now! The lowest of the twelve, D.K.W., sold 3,608 cars in 1962, beating such huge British manufacturers as B.M.C., Rootes, Standard/Triumph and Vauxhall. Is the fact that we are not members of the Common Market the only reason for the poor export records of British firms?
