1998 - The essential guide to the season
The return of racing to Goodwood may be the highpoint of the 1998 Historic motorsport season, but as Marcus Pye reports, it’s just one of many exciting dates over the…
OUTBOARD NEWS FROM NEAR AND FAR.
THERE are several new motors in the course of production at the moment. In our own country we are shortly to have a new Utility lightweight selling at £22 10s. The lowest priced outboard motor of conventional type. This is the ” T.S.D. pup,” a single cylinder motor of ingenious design with a variable length drive shaft and all the refinements of the larger motors, including variable ignition and a single lever carburettor. We have made a short test of this motor, and it is no exaggeration to say that it actually does all those things that similar sized twins are supposed to do. Starting is absurdly easy and there is ample power to propel quite large vessels
at a good turn of speed.
Slow running is excellent, partly due to the variable ignition and partly to the ingenious rotary valve. With the motor ticking over the boat is practically at a standstill. The ” T.S.D. pup” will be ready for delivery by the end of February and should enjoy the immense popularity that its price and quality merit.
Meanwhile, our old friend, Mr. Sharland, has been busy in Sweden, producing several entirely new outboards. They will be known as the ” Trim ” motors, and a batch of 500 engines of different types is in course of construction. The range includes three utility models, one baby, of 4-5 horse power, a medium
power twin of 6-8 h.p., weighing 60 lbs., and a 30 h.p. high speed ” Runabout ” model. Sixteen C. class racing engines are also in the course of construction.
The ” Trim ” is a new outboard company, but the manufacture of the engines is being carried out by Messrs. Bolinders who are famous for the manufacture of diesal engines.
Another new model is announced by the Penta factory. This is a 350 c.c. monoblock twin of 10 h.p. The cylinders are situated under the petrol tank at the rear similar to the Johnson” 12,” and the plugs are completely enclosed. The weight of this engine is 90 lbs. and the bore and stroke is 60 mm. by 61.5 mm.
