THE DUNBOYNE MOTOR RACES

1958-1967 by Robin McCullagh

Even for the time, the road races that took pace on a fast triangular circuit around Dunboyne were outdated. Four deaths in three years in the mid1960s sealed the circuit’s fate, but the small village just west of Dublin remains fondly remembered by those who took pad in and witnessed the races.

This volume, the latest in the Irish Transport Series, offers detailed reports of each meeting and a mixed bag of evocative but at times grainy black and white images. A young John Watson both watched and competed at Dunboyne, while Richard Attwood, Alec Poole and Paddy Hopkirk all took theft chances over the formidable Boylan’s humpback bridge. We don’t get any first-hand memories here, which is a shame, but written histories of such tracks are rare, and this one is a welcome addition. Today, it’s almost hard to believe it all even happened. DS Published by Dreoilin Specialist Publications Limited, ISBN 978 1 902773 28 5, €12
