Nigel’s Q&A

Nigel Roebuck has stirred things up on the website this month in his Q&A column after Pat Kenny asked whether it would leave a bad taste if Alonso were to win the 2010 F1 title following the team orders drama at Hockenheim.

“I grow rather weary of the anti-Alonso sentiment which seems rife in this country,” wrote Nigel. “What I find staggering is that for countless years Michael Schumacher demanded – and got – absolute number one status at Ferrari and I don’t recall anything like the criticism of him that Alonso has received.”

It prompted Stuart ‘Caribstu’ Sampson to retort: “if Alonso wins it will be, in my opinion, undeserved. Not only did Alonso get away with breaking the rules, he also avoided a grid penalty at Monza.” Whether we like them or not, Nigel wasn’t far wrong when he wrote on July 23: “Ferrari has been through a very bad patch, but Alonso continues to insist that he can still be World Champion this year. I’m betting that Fernando will come on very strong through the balance of this season…”

Blogs

Our American editor recently travelled to Elkhart Lake to speak at a fund-raising dinner in aid of the late, great Paul Newman’s Victory Junction ‘Hole in the Wall Gang’ camps.

In response to Gordon Kirby’s blog, Don Helms wrote: “This past summer my daughter spent a week at a camp founded by Paul and record executive Lou Adler. Paul’s legacy will live on.”

Race Reports

There’s a growing fan club for Kamui Kobayashi forming on the site. After the Japanese GP Mario Carneiro Neto wrote: “Kobayashi was the star! What an amazing display. That kid knows how to put on a show… Almost reminds me of a young Juan Pablo Montoya.”
