Formula 5000 and sports cars are in the frame this month at two classic British tracks – Oulton Park and Thruxton
KEITH LEWCOCK
Historic motor sport fan Mr Lewcock had help getting these F5000 shots at Thruxton in 1970: “The sponsor was Kodak, so photo areas were established for the public.” {1} Peter Gethin studies his practice lap times. He was second on aggregate in McLaren M10B to claim second straight F5000 title. Note seat padding on nose cone… {2} Gethin’s mechanics chat to Graham McRae and crew member. Practice crashes forced McRae (M10B) and Roy Pike (Leda LT20) {3} to miss race.{4} Roy Pierpoint leans on Bill Shaw’s Rover V8. {5} Alan Rollinson Surtees TS5A was fifth overall. {6} Barry and Neil Marshall manoeuvre Frank Gardner’s modified Lola T190. Gardner won heat two from Gethin to take overall victory.
ALAN BLAIN
A 17-year-old Mr Blain took these pictures during practice for the 1966 Tourist Trophy at Oulton Park. “Sadly my event programme didn’t survive,” he says, “so I have little info about the cars depicted.” {1} Alan Rees was a late entry for two-part race in Ferrari 275LM, but the car was crippled by a loss of gears. {2} Brian Redman’s Red Rose Motors Lola T70 is readied – he was third in heat one. {3} David Piper’s Ferrari P2 – he suffered a broken throttle cable in heat two. {4} David Prophet’s McLaren-Chevrolet was another race casualty, requiring a new head gasket. {5} The Repco engine in Jack Brabham’s eponymous car was flown over from Australia a week before the race, only to develop an oil leak… {6} Ford GT40 of Peter Sutcliffe lasted the distance to finish third overall, but Keith St John’s McLaren-Ford {7} suffered a broken exhaust.
