Milligan has last at Goodwood

VSCC I Goodwood Sprint I Oct 16

Fast becoming an end-of-season tradition, the VSCC’s sprint at Goodwood in mid-October provided a convincing victory for Spike Milligan’s HWM-Jaguar. With a best run which was a whopping 7sec clear of the rest, it stormed to the overall FTD as well as the post-war class victory.

The pre-war spoils came down to a straight fight between Trevor John (AC/GN Cognac) and Sean Danaher in his Maserati 8CM. John took a lead of 2sec after the opening run, and when the heavens opened before their second runs, the result was sealed. Never far away from the over1500cc racing cars, the leaders in the up-to-1500cc single-seater class turned in one of the closest battles of the day. Although Gary Caroline had been quicker in practice in his Morgan Super Aero, he was pipped on the first runs by Grant Crawley’s Riley Falcon Special. But with less than a fifth of a second between them, Caroline’s hopes of turning the tables on the second run were

also dashed by the weather.

Another close finish came in the big-engined sportscar class as Mark Brett (Ballamy Ford V8) got the verdict over the Brough Superior of Jerome Fack by a mere fifth of a second. Meanwhile, in an all-Alvis battle in the special sports class, Brian Maile headed Roy Spiers by only half a second.
