Giorgio Piola’s fine graphical summary of all the the technical shifts in a Formula One season is always worth waiting for, even a year after the event.

His clear, close-up drawings show just what those huge engineering teams are up to in a way you’ll never see from a photograph – from tiny alterations in winglets and brake ducts which bring minute but vital percentage gains to major structural changes.

This year he also includes a tribute to Ken Tyrrell, with cut-aways of Tyrrells from 001 to 025, a chapter on race strategies with alarmingly complex tables of fuel use and time lost, and tables of chassis built.

How he gets access to all this hard-won information I can’t imagine, but this has to be the most thorough source of hard F1 facts, as opposed to politics and personalities, you can buy. GC
