Record hero remembered

The gathering at Loch Ness to commemorate the death of John Cobb there in 1952, when attempting to raise the Water Speed Record, was well attended. It has resulted in a booklet entitled John Cobb Remembered (ISBN 0 9526289 1 0, £2.00 plus postage) about the prelude to the sad accident, with interesting facts and pictures, available from the Glenurquhart Heritage Trust, at Glenurquhart, Inverness, Scotland, while supplies last.

The booklet describes the enormous cavalcade of vehicles which brought Crusader to the Loch over the 1855 suspension bridge at Inverness, with picture, lists the Royal visitors who met Cobb, includes cinefilm shots of the accident, and tells how a service was held in Tweedmouth, with flags at halfmast and thousands of people lining the streets, before the funeral cortège went from there to Esher in Surrey.

The memorial cairn which stands facing the measured mile of the Loch was erected by Glenurquhart Rural Community, the cost met in part by the local community. It still stands.
