THE BANKING’S LOST GP

SIR, The Monza Track Test what an evocative article. Andrew Frankel is correct in stating four World Championship Grands Prix have been held on the combined road and banked track circuit 1955-56 and ’60

and ’61. However the total was nearly five as it was planned to run the 1963 race over the full track. Problems started during first day’s practice, after several drivers had experienced difficult moments negotiating the banked section, and Bob Anderson suffered an accident, the organisers called a halt. Later practice resumed on the road circuit alone (as did the GP). The reason given was the police thought the banking too dangerous from the spectators’ point of view. More likely was the view that if the full circuit was used, most entrants would boycott the race, as happened in 1960.

The 1963 GP held at Monza is unique in that no other GP has been held where two different circuit configurations were used at the same event.
