Cut Above The Rest

Sir,

Matthew Franey’s article on the ex-Protheree E-type, CUT 7 was another MOTOR SPORT masterpiece which I read with extra interest as Dick was, in this area, our local hero when it came to motor racing. Indeed the Protheroe Motor Group is still alive and kicking in Market Harborough.

However may I respectfully point out one omission in your race history of CUT 7. This being that it took part in the GT & Sportscar Race at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, July 20th 1963. I enclose a photograph taken from the old pits roof standing area.

I unearthed the August 1963 edition of MOTOR SPORT from my complete collection of copies from 1959 to 1971 to find the published results comprised of only the first three in each class, CUT 7 thus being out of the top three.

Re my photograph, note the position of the fuel filler as against that in the photograph at Reims. The re-location was obviously carried out between Reims on June 30th and Silverstone on July 20th for some reason, this poses the question as to its location on the car at the time of your test as it is not visible in the photographs.

May I take this opportunity of congratulating you on a superb publication. I, like Mr Allen of Blandford Forum, (Letters, November issue) also returned to MOTOR SPORT in April 1997. In fact when reading the report on Goodwood the hairs really did stand up on one’s neck. Absolutely superb, excellent photography, and as for Simon Taylor’s Modern Times, the best thing since DSJ’s letter from Europe.

A real motorsport magazine, keep it up.

I am, yours, etc. Stuart Warriner, Foxton, Leicestershire
