I was sorry to receive news from South Africa that George Tuck had died aged 89. When I began to road-test MGs for MOTOR SPORT, he was the handsome, efficient Publicity Officer at Abingdon, working closely with Cecil Kimber. He had joined MG in 1929, after a spell in Gamage’s motor department. He soon joined MG’s European sales staff, establishing dealerships there and in the USA. He had considerable influence on MG styling, and the famous Octagon badge, but when I knew him he was responsible for MG advertising and those evocative if peaceful photographs of MGs in country settings.

After the Nuffield take-over Tuck become the representative for the Far East and British Colonial Africa, etc, and in 1952 BMC’s export director, and its general manager from 1958, retiring in 1969. He then pursued his hobbies of fishing and sailing. His end came peacefully, marking a close with the early Kimber era of MG activities.
