Ken Tyrrell honoured at historic racing awards
Legendary Formula One team owner Ken Tyrrell received a lifetime achievement award at the second Classic & Sports Car Historic Motorsport Awards, held at London’s Park Lane Hotel on Halloween Night.
Tyrrell, part of the Formula One scene for over three decades, was presented with his award by Jackie Stewart, the man he led to three world titles. An emotional Stewart paid tribute to the man without whom, he said, “I would not have got anywhere in this sport.” Also present at the glittering occasion to honour Tyrrell were former employees Jody Scheckter and Jonathan Palmer and his current team designer Dr Harvey Postlethwaite.
Over 400 guests, including drivers, owners, sponsors and dealers packed into the West End hotel to enjoy a night at which eight historic motorsport drivers were also recognised at the prestigious ceremony. Cooper T51 racer Rod Jolley won the Motor Sport Trophy for Best Owner-Driver in any series after his superb successes this season, notably in Monaco and Phoenix Park.
Other notable winners were Nick Mason, who won the Coys of Kensington Trophy for Driver of the Festival, Burkhard von Schenk who claimed the Roy Salvadori Trophy for best performance in a front-engined GP car and Motor Sport track tester Willie Green, who collected the Champagne Cosset Trophy for most sparkling performance in any historic car, after his magnificent wet weather drive in the Alfetta 158 at the Coys Historic Festival.
