Skoda Uplift?

BBC-2’s programme, billed as highlighting Skoda’s improved image under VW, disappointed me. A query as to whether changing an established model for a new one was a good move and reminders of the jokes about the older rear-engined Skodas, seemed to defeat the object. Well, Henry Ford withstood jokes about his Model-T and sold over 15 million of them. No emphasis on rallying, yet Skoda achieved 16 RAC class-wins in 16 years by 1989, the last time I drove a Skoda, when I had no serious criticisms of the Rapide 136 coupe at its prevailing price of £4,395. Last year Skoda took the World F2 rally championship. I can see why some Skoda Club members worry that the make may be losing its former characteristic identity.
