Tension in the Golf

In reply to your reader’s letter about balding Golf GTi drivers (MOTOR SPORT, October 1987), I offer the following comments and advice.

I too have suffered hair loss whilst driving GTis, and the acquisition of a 16V model has worsened matters, despite an attempt to allay the problem by registering the vehicle in the wife’s name (luckily, she has shown no ill effects yet). Clearly the problem is associated with driving rather than ownership.

I suggest baldness is meretly an evolutionary process to reduce wind resistance whilst travelling “supertunically” (over 100) with the sun-roof open. As such, the purchase of a (“Buy More Wigs”) BMW would be unlikely to help, but would demonstrate sufficient affluence to cure the problem artificially.

Alternatively, a transit van (over-cab box type) might provide the necessary protection from wind-drag and worryingly high performance.
