In writing a stop-press review of the Earls Court Show I inadvertently ascribed Goodyear tyres to the Indianapolis Lotus-Ford which was on Show. The Indianapolis race was won on Firestone tyres, although Goodyear have contributed to important race victories in other fields, Incidentally, although the Indianapolis-winning Lotus-Ford used Autolite sparking plugs, every Grand Prix race of 1965 was won with Champion plugs.
In my impressions of the Mercedes-Benz 600 I said in the early part of the article that the windows of this fine car were opened and closed electrically, although later this was given as an hydraulic operation. Daimler-Benz find hydraulic window-lifts lighter and quieter than electric servos, and their system enables control to be maintained over the speed at which the window glasses are raised and lowered. The tool-kit of the Mercedes-Benz 600 contains a neat set of equipment for servicing the hydraulic system and making new joints if existing ones have to be disturbed or develop a leak, thus enabling the car’s hydraulics to be properly maintained even if the car is out of reach of a service station.-W.
