Kylami 9 Hours, Johannesburg (Nov. 6TH)

A number of private European entrants went out to S. Africa for the 9-hour race on the KyIami circuit, and the event proved to be a good battle between David Piper, in his Ferrari 365 P2 that he had new for the Guards Trophy last August, and Peter Sutcliffe in his first race with his newly acquired Ford GT40. Piper was ably partnered by Attwood and Sutcliffe by Ireland and both cars had troubles, the Ferrari damaging water pipes when Piper left the road, and the Ford suffering from failing oil-pressure and a collapsing wire-wheel. Just when the Ford looked like winning Sutcliffe slowed right down, due to the collapsing wheel, and Attwood surged past to win in the last laps.
