THE 8 18 TALBOT
THE 8,18 TALBOT
From time to time in these columns I have noticed reference to that grand little vintage car, the 8-18 Talbot. I therefore thought you might be interested to hear of a rather good example of the type, which I ran until -a short time -ago. This was a 1924 model two-seater, and when I purchased it for E,6 it was in quite reasonable running order. After using the car regularly each day for about a month I decided that I would thoroughly overhaul the chassis and body and restore the car to something like its original condition. There seemed to be amazingly little wear in the main components, and when everything had been thoroughly cleaned up and the body resprayed I had a most interesting little car, oversize pistons were fitted, the suspension stiffened up, a new windscreen and instrument panel made, the upholstery recovered and stronger valve springs fitted. The solid back axle and artillery wheels with small section tyres were however retained.
Cornering, with the high geared steering and solid drive, was really excellent. Suspension was hard but very steady, acceleration was quite good, 40 m.p.h. being normal on second gear of the rather widely spaced three-speed box..
Unfortunately I wrote the car off by somersaulting it when trying to corner too quickly. However, I can thoroughly reconunend the type to anyone wanting some fun at minimum cost. I am, Yours etc.,
