END OF .SEASON RECORDS

The Austin takes a record—and loses it.

ON the last day of October, T. Murray Jamieson took out the Austin with which he has been so successful recently for an attempt on the 50 kilometre record in Class H. Montlhery Track was used, and he succeeded in raising the record to 113.47 m.p.h. as against the previous figure of 105.65 m.p.h. established by George Eyston’s M.G. Midget.

The ‘ Magic ‘ Midget Again. Three weeks later the seater

Three weeks later the single seater M.G. Midget took the track once more, Denly at the wheel. Montlhery was, of course, the track used, owing to its fine surface. The run went off like clockwork, the car doing precisely what it had been planned to do, and the following records were established in Class H. :

50 kilos. 115 m.p.h. (Austin, 113.47 m.p.h.).

50 miles. 114.47 m.p.h. (MG. 106.67 m.p.h.).

100 kilos. 113.50 m.p.h. (M.G., 106.72 m.p.h.).

100 miles. 111.17 rn.p,h. (M.G., 101.09 in.p.h.).

1 hour. 110.87 m.p.h. (M.G., 101.11 m.p.h.).

Thus the M.G. Midget still holds all the records in Class H, and of this last attempt the 1 hour record stands out as one of the great record achievements of the year.

Maserati attacks World’s record. . . .

On October 26th the Swiss driver, H. Ruesch, better known as the driver of Alfa Romeos in the 1,500 c.c. class of road races, appeared at Montlhery with a 3 litre Maserati. With this car he proceeded to attack the World’s standing

kilometre record, held by the late J. G. P. Thomas (Thomas Special ” Babs “) at a speed of 86.90 m.p.h. The Maserati had no difficulty in raising this figure to 88.33 m.p.h., a fine effort for a 3 litre car.

Activity at Brooklands and Montlhery, results in records for M.G., Napier, Rai:ton, Bugatti, Austin, Maserati and Panhard.

. . . And so does the Napier-Railton. 5 days after the Maserati record, John Cobb turned out at Brooklands for a attempt on Thomas’s record, the co ordination between the officials of France and England having failed to function in so short a time. Cobb’s speed was 88.14 m.p.h. and he thought he had made a new record, being ignorant of Ruesch’s per-. formance. However, he had the consola

ton of breaking the record for the standing mile, held previously by Kaye 1 on on the 4 litre Sunbeam at 100.77 m.p.h. The speed accomplished by the Napier Railton was 102.5 m.p.h. A feature of these records was the fact that they had to be covered in both directions, with the result that the famous bump had to be taken the wrong way, the

car then going on to steeper banking instead of a gradually flattening surface. By really skilful driving, however, Cobb held the car on its proper course. On the same day he set up a new International Class A’ record for the standing kilometre at 84.12 m.p.h.

When Cobb was informed by embarrassed officials that he had only beaten a world’s record which had already been beaten a few days earlier, he promptly went down to Brook-lands again. He then made an entirely new record at 88.52 m.p.h. at which speed the world’s standing kilometre record is now held.

In the course of these attempts the Napier-Railton set up a new ” local ” record for the fastest flying kilometre ever timed at Brooklands. His speed was 143.67 m.p.h., against Don’s previous figure of 140.95.

Bugatti Records.

Ph rre Veyron, the well known driver of small Bugattis on the Continent, has recently put up some very fine records at Montlh&y. On October 28th he collected five records in Class F (up to 1,500 c.c.) as fellows :

500 kilos. 109.18 m.p.h. (Eelage, 102.77 imp h.).

500 miles. 107.71 m.p.h. (Alvis, 98.37 m.p.h.).

1,000 kilos. 107.60 m.p.h. (Eelage, 98.73 m.p.h.).

3 hours. 109.16 m.p.h. (Delage, 102.81 m p. h.).

6 hours. 107.52 m.p.h. (Delage, 98.27 m.p.h.). A few days later Veyron went out again, (Continued on page 95) and this time he took the 200 miles record at 116.49 m.p.h. as against the old record of 111,65 m.p.h. held by Eyston’s Riley. Then, the following week he rounded off a splendid attempt with three very fast records, as follows:

100 miles. 119.01 m.p.h. CD erbyMiller, 118.13 m.p.h.).

200 kilos. 118.88 m.p.h. (D erbyMiller, 118.32 m.p.h.).

1 hour. 119.01 m.p.h. (Derby-Miller, 118.29 m.p.h.).
