You feel the history of the place, all the drivers who’ve won the race before, and the history of the track itself, all the great races there. And then there are the fans out there cheering for you. You feel so warmly appreciated and the support you get at Silverstone is bigger than anywhere else. The British race fans support us all, whether we’re at the back or winning, and that’s really a great feeling.

In the last few laps I was thinking about my accident at Brands (in 1988), all the pain and hardship I’d gone through to get into this position, all the hard work that’s all I could think about. And it was fingers crossed, those last five laps, just hoping the car would get to the end. The celebrations came later, after I’d crossed the line, and I thought about how few people are lucky enough to win the British Grand Prix. I’d finally done it, and that was a great feeling.”
