Spike’ Winter

A talented engineer whose brains Keith Duckworth was wont to pick, John ‘Spike’ Winter has died, aged 84.

After an RAF training, Winter joined Frazer Nash and became mechanic to Stirling Moss before making his mark with John Willment, both building racing cars and developing tuning equipment. With Ken Brittain he then formed Racing Services (Engines) Ltd, supplying power units to Graham Hill, Emerson Fittipaldi and Jody Scheckter among others. Latterly he restored historic engines at The Engine Shop.
