Festival of Motoring

Road racing returned to St Helier for the eighth Jersey Festival of Motoring, which this time incorporated a show with concours judging for best period car and costume.

The three pre-72 speed events kicked off with a moonlight sprint along the Victoria Avenue promenade, using part of the route of the 1947 Jersey International Road Race, the first major British international race after WW2, which attracted the likes of Prince Bira, Raymond Sommer in a Maserati 4CL, and Raymond Mays’ ERA.

Motor Sport’s Simon Taylor was quickest in the sprint in the Stovebolt special while Brian Moody led the way on the Westmount hillclimb. At the Mount Bingham climb on the opposite side of St Helier, the fastest time went to Simon le Rougetel in his Ford Anglia.

The winner on aggregate was local man Moody in his Twin-Cam-powered Ginetta G12. Taylor was second while third went to Robin Johnson in his Austin Healey Sprite. Chris Forster’s BMW 328/329 Special (pictured left) was one of many local specials competing.
