Flockharts - the facts

Sir,

Robert Edwards’ article of Ron Flockhart in the May edition justifiably highlights Flockhart’s third place with the Connaught B7 in the 1956 Grand Prix of Europe as heroic. However, it was hardly a “very close third” as he was a lap down on the winner at the finish. More serious, though, is the assertion that Archie

Scott Brown took provisional pole with the Connaught. I spoke to Robert Edwards and was told that I hadn’t done my homework in sufficient depth. I wasn’t convinced and still prefer to believe the contemporary reports which suggest that Scott Brown was only there as a spectator.

What new evidence has come to light in the 40-plus years to make us change history?
