Rouen in ruins

With reference to your editorial comments in the July edition, I must tell you that the situation at Rouen is much worse than you have been led to believe.

As one of the pitlane voices of Radio Le Mans, I was in convoy with my colleague John Hindhaugh on route to La Sarthe when, naturally, we took a detour to Rouen.

We found our way onto the old pit straight and our hearts sank. Not only has the pit complex been wiped out, but so has the tribune opposite.

Our hearts almost gave out as we rounded the final sweeper on the approach to the Nouveau Monde Hairpin — the cobbled section of the hairpin had been replaced by Tarmac.

It was too much for Hindhaugh, who could not bring himself to turn into the infamous righthander and went sailing straight on towards the roundabout further on. How can these people do such a thing? They have no concept of the historical heritage this location has. And no soul to boot
